Bachelor Ben Higgins On Wedding Planning, Hotel Workouts, & On-Set Health Hacks
by Corrie Ulbricht-Shatto, Carroll ReiderBachelor Ben Higgins opens up about his healthy habits, his favorite meals to make with Jess, and just how involved he is (or isn’t) in the wedding planning!
How has your nutrition evolved over the years? Have you always been savvy when it comes to health & wellness?
BH: Growing up I was involved in athletics. Most of my youth was spent exercising or playing outside. As I have gotten older and the opportunities for competition and sports have decreased, I now take it upon myself to stay healthy, active, and fit.
It must be hard to keep a healthy diet and stay fit while filming. What was your workout routine while on set?
BH: I am currently filming a show right now as I write this! Today I woke up and worked out in my hotel room right away. I design hotel workouts that at the least get my heart racing (I do not claim they are the best workouts around). Then I typically try to get outside and run. Being outside is good for my mind and helps me get prepared for the day ahead. Typically, on set snacks are unhealthy so I try to pack my own snacks and vitamins.
What were your go-to healthy snacks while filming? Any guilty pleasure meals?
BH: I am a big fan of a margherita pizza after any long day supplemented by a glass of bourbon, anejo tequila, or red wine. For snacks I do a lot of almonds or smoothies. Heavy snacks or midday meals make me tired and I want to try and stay alert during those days!
Have you set a date for your wedding?
BH: We have! We are so excited to be able to make this happen (fingers crossed). We are getting married in November of 2021!
What is your role in the wedding planning? How involved are you?
BH: Hahaha this is a good question. I am involved because Jess really loves my opinion but there are many elements to the wedding that I am not involved with. I do not pick out the flowers, decorations, dresses, etc. For the most part I am just happy to be there!
Do you and Jess have any favorite meals you like to cook together? What about your favorite fruits and veggies?
BH: We love to cook together! Jess is half Italian so her family cooks some of the best pasta! When we are together, we will usually spend a few nights cooking and a few date nights. We do not get to be around each other too often so when we are, we want to make it special.
Jess is a super healthy eater. She is very good about what she puts in her body! I would say that berries, acai, banana, carrot, kale, ginger, and brussels sprouts all show up on our plates often!
Do you and Jess like to work out together? How do you guys stay active together?
BH: We are not together very often. In fact, as I write this Jess and I have been apart of about a month and a half. She is finishing up esthetician school in Nashville and I am still in Denver. When we are apart, we both work out often. I think we both try to do something active for at least 20 minutes a day 6 days a week.
One of our favorite things to do when we are together is go on runs/walks together. Jess ran track at Ole Miss so she is a super good runner. I like to try and follow her for as long as I can!
Will any bachelor nation be in your wedding party?
BH: Definitely! We both have some incredible friends from Bachelor Nation. They are people who have become lifelong friends and the wedding wouldn’t feel right without them with us. You are probably going to see multiple people from the show at the wedding!
Who are some of the most interesting people you’ve met because of being the Bachelor? (Other than Jess, haha)
BH: Obviously Jess! I honestly would say being on the show has allowed me to meet so many interesting people. Every week I do a show on Instagram called “Hope Still Wins” and I get to interview people from all different places, backgrounds, etc. I get to hear stories from people all the time and it is one of the best things about being on the show. I have met people from Samuel L Jackson to Ellen. I have also met people in midwestern agriculture cities during my Bachelor on Stage Tour. I have really enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life!
What did you learn about yourself in taking the nurish quiz? Any specific fitness or wellness goals you shared?
BH:I learned a ton. In fact, after the quiz I then went and analyzed my daily habits. I think that it is important for me while I have the opportunity to try and feel my best and be my best. This quiz helps me customize my needs so that I can be the healthiest version of me. I was really struggling with a vitamin regimen and I was really excited to get onto a customized routine.
